A Texas town’s mayor has resigned after being charged with attempting to seduce a youngster.
Prior to a city council meeting on Thursday, Pilot Point Mayor Matthew McIlravy, 42, who was charged last week with internet solicitation of a juvenile under the age of 14, presented his resignation.
McIlravy, a married father of two sons, was detained on Tuesday by Dallas police after a five-month undercover investigation, according to the publication.
An arrest warrant document claims that the mayor, who only recently assumed office, attempted to meet up and have sex with a girl he believed to be 13 years old.
Following McIlravy’s departure, Pilot Point’s mayor pro tem will take over as mayor. He began a three-year tenure as mayor of the 4,000-person town in Denton County in May, according to the website, which has taken down his biography.
McIlravy, a former member of the Pilot Point City Council, was charged with a second-degree felony and lodged in the Dallas County prison on Tuesday afternoon.
The Morning News stated that he had been freed on bail. It’s unknown if he has retained a lawyer who could represent him in court.
According to the investigators, McIlravy allegedly engaged in additional communication with unnamed juveniles.
