Attorney General’s Office Attacked With Explosive Device

EXPLOSIVE Attack - AG Targeted!

2051

Alabama is currently embroiled in a dispute following a state Supreme Court decision broadening the definition of a child to include frozen embryos. This ruling has disrupted in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures in the state. Recently, an incident occurred outside the attorney general’s office related to this matter.

An explosive device was found outside the office of Republican Steve Marshall on February 24. Sources indicate that the device was detonated close to the junction of South Bainbridge Street and Washington Avenue in Montgomery. Attorney General Marshall released a statement affirming that no staff or personnel were harmed by the blast.

The investigation into the explosion is being spearheaded by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). Sgt. Jeremy Burkett stated that the State Bureau of Investigation was informed of the detonation shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, February 26. Following the explosion, state troopers and agents from the ALEA Hazardous Device Unit swiftly responded to the scene and confirmed its safety.

Authorities have not provided a motive for the explosion, but it occurred after Marshall made a commitment not to pursue legal action against IVF providers. Katherine Robertson, Marshall’s chief counsel, stated to the media that the Attorney General had no plans to use the recent ruling as grounds for prosecuting IVF families or providers.

While there’s no evidence linking the two events, their timing is significant. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital disclosed its decision to halt all IVF procedures due to the ruling. Similarly, the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Alabama Fertility Specialists declared their suspension of treatments in response to the same ruling.

Dr. Mamie McLean, a specialist at Alabama Fertility Specialists, expressed to ABC News the clinic’s concerns regarding the broad implications of the ruling on determining what can be safely frozen or discarded. The court decision has raised the prospect of IVF doctors facing civil and potentially criminal liability for embryo destruction.

The ALEA is urging anyone with information about the explosion to reach out to them at 334-676-7890.
