After revealing himself as a transsexual, a Republican mayor shot himself in the head. A.L. Following his outing by a conservative blog, Copeland, also known as “Bubba,” took his own life two days later.

Bubba Copeland assumed the position of mayor in 2016 in Smiths Station, Alabama, advocating for the economic advancement of the town. Despite facing significant damage from a March 2020 storm, he effectively fulfilled his promise. Proud of the small community, with a population of fewer than 5,400 residents, Copeland commended its commendable low crime rates and minimal issues with drugs.

Suicide was the sole issue he did name, stating that it was “our number one problem” and hinting at his own demise. Copeland served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in the neighboring city of Phenix City in addition to his role as mayor.

Beyond his political and religious engagements, Copeland’s multifaceted identity came to light on November 1 through a disclosure by the conservative blog, 1819 News. The blog detailed Copeland’s secret persona as “Brittini Blaire Summerlin,” self-identified as a “Transitioning Transgender Curvy Girl.” Operating social media accounts under the Summerlin alias, Copeland participated in various groups related to transgender, plus-size, and “Big Bimbo women.” The blog further uncovered images of Copeland donning women’s attire.

On the day the news surfaced, Copeland delivered a sermon at his church, addressing the congregation about being targeted in an online assault. He confessed to taking pictures at home alongside his wife and expressed apologies to the parishioners for any discomfort he may have caused. According to 1819 News, Copeland characterized this activity as a personal hobby and a fantasy used for stress relief.

Sadly, it appears that Copeland was unable to handle the stress of the exposure. He shot himself to death on November 3 during a welfare check conducted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. His church thanked followers on Facebook the next day and urged them to continue praying for Pastor Bubba Copeland’s family.
