New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has asked the Biden administration to disregard an injunction blocking FDA clearance of the abortion medication mifepristone. Mifepristone has been used for over two decades.
A lawsuit challenging the safety and FDA’s clearance procedure for mifepristone was granted preliminary injunction on Friday by a judge selected by Trump. Kacsmaryk halted the licensing of the abortion pill in his statement and gave the Biden administration seven days to appeal or “seek emergency relief.”
The verdict was quickly announced to be appealed by the Biden administration. Two congressmen, including Ocasio-Cortez, have asked President Biden to delay enforcing the injunction while the case is pending because of the widespread indignation among Democrats over the court’s ruling.
In an interview with CNN, she said that the government should “ignore this ruling.” The “deeply partisan” judges, she said, have “engaged in unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the courts,” and this judgment is “unprecedented” and “unfounded.” She went on to add that the Biden administration has the option of implementing the judgment or not since it is contingent on a third party doing so.
Oregon Senator Ron Wyden issued a similar comment, arguing that the judgment was motivated by conservative ideology and that the FDA should be allowed to disregard the court’s decision.
