According to reports, a private meeting on September 1 may have put Hakeem Jeffries in the running to succeed Nancy Pelosi as leader of the House Democrats.
The reports stated that over the summer congressional recess, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the leader of the House Democratic Caucus, met at Clyburn’s office.
Jeffries was motivated to travel to California to meet with Clyburn after learning about California Rep. Adam Schiff’s quiet campaign for the speakership. Clyburn reportedly gave Jeffries’ campaign his unequivocal backing during the meeting.

How a secret meeting during the summer recess may ensure @hakeemjeffries historic ascent
And lots more on the *other* campaign in the House this fall https://t.co/PbdGQgEcEb
Clyburn described Jeffries as an up-and-coming young Democrat and stated,“There’s nothing I would ever do to impede the progress of our up-and-coming young Democrats, and I see him as an up-and-coming young Democrat. He knows that, I didn’t have to tell him that — but I did.”
Republicans are scheduled to make leadership announcements one week after the midterm elections and are currently expected to win the House of Representatives. Speaker Pelosi will probably be replaced by Kevin McCarthy, leaving Jeffries in the position of minority leader.
Pelosi is anticipated to resign from her position as speaker of the House as well as from Congress if Democrats fail to hold the House
