According to persons acquainted with the situation, an intruder with a hammer stormed into the Pelosi family’s San Francisco home early on Friday and attacked and badly beat Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

According to the sources, the suspect picked their San Francisco residence.

According to two people with knowledge of the attack who spoke to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, Paul Pelosi, 82, received blunt force wounds to his head and torso. Doctors were treating him for other injuries in addition to severe swelling and bruising.

Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi, stated that he was anticipated to recover fully.

According to the spokesperson, the attacker is in prison, and the reason behind the attack is being looked into.

Despite the lack of clarity around the attack’s circumstances, it raises concerns for the safety of Congress members and their families because threats against elected officials have never been higher, nearly two years after the tragic Capitol Insurrection. Additionally, the attack occurs only 11 days before the midterm elections, when crime and public safety have become major issues for Americans.

A total of 9,600 threats against members of Congress were examined by Capitol Police in 2021, and there have been recent violent attacks on lawmakers. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., suffered serious wounds when a shooter opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team practice in 2017. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at a gathering outside a grocery store in Tucson in 2011.

Nancy Pelosi was with her security detail in Washington, according to Capitol Police, who are in charge of guarding House leaders, when her husband was attacked. She just got back from a security conference in Europe and will be a main speaker at an advocacy event with Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday night.
