The Secret Service acknowledged on Thursday that it did, in fact, have information on those who visited President Biden’s house in Wilmington, Delaware, when he stored secret records there.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, asserted on Monday, “we don’t independently maintain our own visitor logs because it’s a private residence.”
Guglielmi’s tone, however, altered on Thursday when he claimed that the Secret Service does create records for law enforcement and criminal justice purposes for various people who might interact with Secret Service-protected sites.
According to an anonymous source, the Secret Service is ready to give Congress access to any background information it has on vetted visitors to Biden’s home.
Republican legislators floated subpoenas for Biden’s family members and aides to fill in the documentation gaps after the agency’s initial claim that it had no information to share with journalists or members of Congress sparked outrage.
As part of the investigation into the incident, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) is a member of the House Judiciary Committee. On Monday, he stated that if there were no records, “we’ll have to seek it through testimony with family members or those who have been at the residence.”
As the secret papers issue escalated last week, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and other GOP leaders in Congress wanted Delaware visitor data.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request made by The Post, the Secret Service stated in April that no records including logs of Biden’s visits to Delaware had been discovered. The Secret Service dismissed a FOIA appeal in late September, stating once more to The Post that no applicable materials had been discovered following an additional check of pertinent program offices.
Following the discovery of documents from Biden’s vice presidency in his former offices at the Penn Biden Center in Washington on November 2, a cache of papers was discovered on December 20 in the Wilmington house’s garage close to the President’s beloved classic Corvette.
Biden and his team were reportedly given permission by the FBI to examine the homes on their own since they were seen as being helpful.
Robert Hur, a special counsel, is investigating whether Biden or anybody in his sphere broke the law by improperly handling records. Jack Smith, a different special counsel, is investigating whether former president Donald Trump improperly handled papers brought to his Florida home after leaving office. On August 8, the FBI conducted a raid at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to seize documents.
