A young girl was killed while participating in a Christmas parade in North Carolina when a driver lost control of the car pulling a float and slammed into her.

For CC & Co., a GMC Denali had been pulling a float. When the driver started shrieking that he had lost control of the car during the Raleigh Christmas Parade, ABC 11 reported.

According to CBS 17, Raleigh Police eventually determined that the driver was Landen C. Glass, 20.

Despite attempts to save her life, the girl later passed away, according to the station. Glass struck her at a sluggish speed. Other participants weren’t hurt either.

“They were trying to get us all out of the way. But unfortunately, one of the dancers was not able to get out of the way. They pulled the dancer out right in front of us,” Cheyenne Hamilton, a dancer who is 17 years old, said.

Glass is accused with misdemeanor vehicular homicide, careless and reckless driving, using substandard equipment, moving in a dangerous manner, and carrying a firearm during a procession.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the young girl who lost her life today at the Raleigh Christmas Parade. Our prayers are with her family, friends and the dancers from CC & Co. The community is here for you as we try to understand and process this shared tragedy,” Raleigh mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin stated.
