German police detained the teenage protester during a demonstration against the expansion of coal mining near the west German community of Lützerath.
She gained international recognition with actions like this one and her school strike campaign, which spread throughout Europe and promoted climate awareness.
Even further, Time Magazine named her the Time Person of the Year in 2019. She is the youngest individual to have ever held the position.
