On Wednesday, the House Ethics Committee revealed the initiation of an investigative subcommittee into Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) concerning possible infractions related to campaign finance and other violations of House regulations.

As stated in an official announcement, the committee specified that the subcommittee will assess whether Cherfilus-McCormick potentially breached campaign finance laws and regulations related to both her 2022 special election and 2022 re-election campaigns.

Additionally, the investigation will examine whether there was a failure to appropriately disclose mandated information on documents required by the House and whether voluntary services for official duties were accepted from an individual not employed in her congressional office.

The committee refrained from providing additional details on the allegations, adhering to its customary practice of not disclosing the substance of accusations against members until the investigations are concluded.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s office similarly refrained from providing additional information regarding the allegations.

Following a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics in September, the House Ethics Committee voted to expand its investigation into matters concerning Cherfilus-McCormick.

Cherfilus-McCormick entered the House in 2022 through a successful special election in the southern Florida district, filling the seat left vacant by the late Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.). Subsequently, she secured a full-term election later in the same year.
