The body camera video, which Ohio police released on Friday, shows a police officer fatally shooting a black pregnant lady inside her car.
According to a report from Fox News, Ta’Kiya Young, a 21-year-old mother of two children who is also expecting a third child, visited a Kroger in the suburb of Blendon Township on August 24 but never came back because she was thought to have stolen alcohol bottles. Young was fatally shot by the police after they approached her outside the shop. Her unborn daughter also perished in the incident.
Ta’Kiya Young’s family lashed out at police after the shooting and said it “should have never ever, ever happened.”
A Kroger employee can be seen approaching the police officers in the bodycam video and informing them that numerous persons have just stolen goods and fled. The Kroger employee indicated Ta’Kiyah Young, who was seated “in a Lexus sedan with no license tags parked in a handicapped spot right in front of the store.”
When the officers arrived at the Lexus, they repeatedly ordered Young to get out. She ignored their orders and started acting irrationally.
“What? Are you going to shoot me?” Ta’Kiya Young is heard saying as she accelerates the car and tries to run over the officer.
According to the police chief who watched the bodycam film, the officer was in immediate danger and was forced to use force.
“The officer who was directly in the path of the oncoming car fired one shot through the front windshield. The body camera footage I’ve reviewed also confirms the officer was directly in the path of the car,” Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford said at a press briefing on Friday.
