The former standout of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants officially initiated his political campaign by sharing a video encapsulating key moments from his illustrious baseball career.
Within the video, he expressed his commitment to adopting centrist and moderate stances despite representing the GOP. Furthermore, he emphasized that his dedication throughout his baseball career was directed towards the people of California, rather than aligning with any particular political group, be it Republicans, Democrats, or Independents. Garvey also made reference to pressing issues afflicting the state, such as concerns regarding crime and the homelessness crisis.
In an interview with Fox News, Garvey disclosed that he cast his vote for the former President, Donald Trump, in previous elections. However, he declined to comment on his affiliation with the “MAGA faction” within the Republican Party. It’s worth noting that the former president and past presidential candidate faced substantial defeats in California in both the 2020 and 2016 elections. Nonetheless, he continues to maintain a considerable following of conservative-leaning and Republican supporters within the state.
Regarding the topic of abortion, an issue that Democrats have sought to rally their base around, particularly following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Garvey expressed his dissent with a blanket nationwide abortion prohibition. He conveyed to Fox News that, in his capacity as the state’s representative, he remains committed to honoring the voices of the people, highlighting that the majority of Californians have already expressed their stance on this issue.
Garvey provided insight into his decision to enter the political arena, citing his inability to continue overlooking the significant disarray presently prevalent in Washington, D.C. He also underlined his deep affection for California as the motivating force behind his candidacy, emphasizing the absence of a candidate who truly resonated with the people.
