In three different events this week, British climate activists bonded their hands to the frames of three priceless works of art, including one by Vincent van Gogh, in an effort to denounce the country’s environmental policy.
According to supporters, the protests on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday targeted paintings by Horatio McCulloch, Vincent van Gogh, and JMW Turner at galleries in Glasgow, London, and Manchester.
At this week’s G7 conference in Germany, protesters criticized global leaders for failing to take significant action against climate change. Just Stop Oil supported and planned the pranks.
Members of the group flocked to McCulloch’s “My Heart’s In The Highlands” sculpture on Wednesday at Scotland’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
The emblem of the environmental organization was also painted in orange on the gallery’s walls and floor by the demonstrators. According to the report, two males and three women were taken into custody.
A man and a woman were confronted by authorities after sticking themselves to van Gogh’s “Peach Trees in Blossom” the next day, according to a video posted by Just Stop Oil.
Louis McKechnie, 21, wrote on the organization’s website that directors of art institutions “should be calling on the government to stop all new oil and gas projects immediately.” Either we are complicit or we are resisting.
Twenty-four-year-old Emily Brocklebank stated, “Billionaires are getting richer while nurses stand in line at food banks, tens of millions of people are starving worldwide, and half the world’s population is exposed to extreme danger from heatwaves, floods, fires, and famine.”
Following a series of interruptions at soccer games to draw attention to the group’s cause and massive blockades to obstruct the shipment of oil in England, art protest initiatives were launched.
